RESILIENCE

A legacy on
The Water

Celebrating tradition, craftsmanship, and community through the spirit of the Galway Hooker. For generations, the Galway Hooker has been more than just a boat — it’s a symbol of resilience, craftsmanship, and adventure. A cornerstone of our cultural maritime heritage, the Galway Hooker was first introduced to the west of Ireland in the late 1800s, used for fishing as well as transporting cattle, turf, livestock and people around the bay. Many factors led to its slow decline and by the late 1980’s a revival of this wooden vessel, to sail as a pleasure craft has ensured the Galway Hooker is still an icon of Galway to this day.

Our Mission

Where it
All Began

Founded in 2019, our story began with the restoration of Lovely Anne — a Galway Hooker built in 1885. A passionate group of volunteers brought her back to life, igniting a wave of interest in preserving this rich maritime tradition. After her successful relaunch, the same community came together again to take on Loveen, another historic vessel. Their determination and collaboration led to the birth of Galway Hooker Sailing Club. Today, we continue to restore, sail, and celebrate these icons of the west.
