Powerboat Training Courses

A fast and exciting way to get into boating is the thrill of driving a powerboat. We provide powerboat training courses which are recognized by IS - Irish Sailing. We cover the Irish Sailing syllabus and upon course completion your certificate will be issued via Irish Sailing.

We run Introduction to Powerboating (Level 1), National Powerboat Certificate (Level 2) and Safety Boat (Level 3) - for members and non-members. Group rates also available - please contact us to discuss.

All are courses are run from the Claddagh Snooker Hall, Claddagh, Galway H91 A6Y6.

Level 1 - Introduction to powerboating

Designed to give beginners the basic knowledge and skills required to become competent crew

  • Learn to safely handle a powerboat, perform basic manoeuvres such as coming alongside, securing to a mooring.

  • Understand the important checks before operating an engine

  • Know the standard set of knots required for boating

 Note: It is recommended to follow this course with the IS Level 2 National Powerboating Certificate course.

Level 2 - National Powerboat Certificate (NPC)

  • Develop the skills and knowledge necessary to safely, and effectively, skipper an open powerboat, by day, on inland and coastal waters with which they are familiar.

  • Develop skills and knowledge to safely take charge and be the skipper of an open powerboat, by day, without supervision in familiar waters.

  • Understand boat preparation and handling both afloat and ashore.

Course Duration

There are currently two options for course dates: 3 half days over weekdays or 2 full days over the weekend.
